Greys score 182 and win by  40? runs

Where to start? No seriously, where to start? No massive knocks, no glorious fifers, no dirty cheating, no hilarious injuries, no world-class catches, no last-over drama. Nothing on which to hang a pithy match report. No snide angle, no grist to the satirical mill. Just a sublime day of match-winning cricket from the Mighty Greys in which everything and everybody performed exactly as you would wish. Tickety -Boo! Everything was for the best on this best of all possible Sundays. 
(No, Terry*, this is not a Voltaire-themed report. *Only current Greysman with a decent education.)

The sun warmed us pleasantly, the deckchairs wore nice Royal blue and white stripes, the wind gusted without bitterness, and the club bar dispensed very reasonably-priced draught Harveys Best. The hosts even provided a scorer so our man Dan could socialise. The less said about this the better. Dan’s socialising, I mean!

Into this most beguiling setting sauntered The Greys, who then proceeded without fanfare or ego to completely dominate the game and forge a comfortable victory in a highly sporting yet amicable manner.

Like a reliable old Bentley, The Greys ticked into action; the batters scored runs but not rude amounts, the bowlers took wickets but shared them about, the fielders stopped the balls that
came near them, sometimes they even caught the ball. It was as if we’ve been doing this for years.

Inevitably the opposition crumbled as the well-oiled** machine that is TheMightyGreys did its work. That is not to say that there weren’t periods when we were anxiously calculating the run rate, but these doubts never lasted long.
(**particularly some sections of the lower order, £3,70!)

Even the showers piped deliciously heated water at the push of a button. Over a pint, and with no-one wearing a gilet, we reviewed the highlights of the game.

l Granite umpiring from Chris.
l Sensationally tight opening spells by Chris and Dan (a wicket apiece)
l Terry pouching a catch at fly slip.
l Sewell producing beauty to beat fwd defensive and clip the off bail. PSM
l Dom stretching high for a c&b
l Chris coolly taking swirly one at mid-off
l Dom trademark catching a bullet at cover.
l Terry taking another wicket first ball 
l Terry finishing game with another flighty toss

Tickety-boo!, or as our friends from The Wirral would say, Sound as a Pound! Then as the last rays of hospitality faded from our hosts, Eleven, count them, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 ,9 ,10, … 11, Greysmen

finished their beers, tossed their bags over the old flint wall and climbed back into a not so perfect world.
