TMGs vs The Wellington on 13 July 2025 by the Clunk

It’s bloody health and safety gone mad! Banning sixes in a game of cricket?!

Inspired by Southwick Cricket Club introducing their well publicised “no-sixes” ban*, the Mighty Greys now conduct an extensive health and safety risk assessment as part of every fixture. The risk assessment report that follows was completed by TMGs Club Secretary.

Risk Assessment

RiskRisk ratingNotes
Have site specific rules been explained to all participants? Have notices been placed in changing areas?LowNotices explaining a site specific rule banning sixes at the ground exist in changing rooms – in summary, a batsman is warned on the occurrence of her/his first offence, but is then retired on second offence.

Extensive briefing on rule provided by Wellington players prior to play.

Repeated reminders to greys’ batsman Duncan throughout the day after being retired for his second offence (PSM).
Is there a danger of a good game of cricket taking place?HighThe Welly opening bowlers started well, keeping things relatively tight and taking the  early wicket of Biff Line.

Greys started to get a foothold in the game with Jerry and Dev playing some nice shots to the boundaries. Until disaster, with Jerry trudging off for 43 after missing a full toss that hit the top of off stump (see entry in the umpiring risks).

This brought Duncan to the crease who proceeded to swish and miss a few balls, hit a lovely 6 over extra cover (first offence), a few singles, a couple of 4s, before making the grave error of slapping a leg side half tracker for a flat 6 to square leg to be retired (PSM).

The Greys scoring accelerated with Dev, Smokin’ Joe, Double D and Dom (received 1st offence warning) forming some nice partnerships to leave the Welly 235 to chase the win.

Greys’ opening bowler, Chris Foulerton, took his usual caught and bowled early on, before Welly bats, Mal and Dean, Rahul and Tom C batted well and put the TMGs bowlers under pressure and posting 207 in reply.
Have suitable steps been taken to minimise risk of harm to public and property?MediumNo sixes rule appears to be fairly effective at reducing balls to the boundary and still achieve a decent and enjoyable game of cricket.

Welly bowlers could refrain from bowling beamers and half trackers which invite batsman to smash away for 6.
Have both teams been adequately trained in interpreting and applying the rules of the game and keeping accurate records?HighChris’ broad interpretation of what constitutes a wide or no-ball (sorry Jerry) warrants further examination.

Failure to allocate sufficient time in the days following the game to write up the match report meant the fine bowling by Ashu, Eo and Terry were omitted from this report in error. Lovely bowling chaps. Terrible bowling by Dom – should have put on that lanky leg spinner instead.

*The sport of cricket has been played at Southwick Green since 1790. In an attempt to address the health and safety concerns of someone or other and maintain the long standing tradition of cricket at Southwick Green scoring of sixes has been banned.

Statto’s scorchio report
Let’s start this week with a lifetime achievement – well done Bumbo/Zonk/Dom whose 34 not out on Sunday took him over 5,000 career runs at a very healthy average of 40.76.
In the season’s stats Chris continues to grind down the opposition with another brace to take him 7 clear in the bowling. In the batting a new individual high score for Dev (60) see him up to 8th with an average of 142.00. Jerry continues to give chase to Chris in the catching.
Next week it’s Streat…watch out for moon balls…

  1. Great stuff Dunc great to finally see a match report, I was most upset about not hitting a shit ball instead playing a shit shot but hey ho there was always next week when I did exactly tye same . Cricket I love it !

  2. Well done Duncan. I wont mention Alex’s Health and Safety themed report of some years ago. It is getting very hard to find an original angle.
