Well, I don’t know, I don’t know where to begin…. as the mighty LCD Soundsystem once sang ; a great song but not a good basis for a match report!
It’s 8 o’clock and ten sad old men sit around a table in the Bear Inn starring at glasses of fine Sussex ale thinking “how did we lose that?” Perhaps the stutter in the middle order of our innings, yes perhaps; maybe Dom suddenly acting like he’d never catch a cricket ball again, yes maybe or perchance only having 10 players with an average age in the low 60’s. But, but, but there was a nagging thought in the minds of them all and slowly their gazes all gravitated towards TMG stalwarts and club legends QB and the Silver Shadow Tel.
They say you can prove anything with statistics (or have I just made that up) but three quarters of the bowling unit sent down 26 overs for 98 runs , match winning figures, unfortunately the other quarter sent down 6 overs for 83 runs which by closely analysing the scoreboard is match losing figures.
Ahhhhh back at 2 o’clock and after Biff got a jaffa from Sanders, bowling from his own house end, Jerry & Tim put on 86 in 14 overs to leave TMG well set before a flurry of wickets slowed the scoring with Jerry well caught in the deep for 36 and Tim bowled for an excellent 52. With Wig (14), Dom (6) and QB (finally dismissed this season for 9) it was left to Alex to roll back the years with a freescoring 30 to leave us on 184 from 35 overs.
After the tea of the season so far TMG openers EO(37-2) and Chris (18-0) tightened the screw on the Hartfield chase with EO’s first wicket being a PSM winning catch behind the stumps by your humble scribe. Dom (21-0) and Tim (22-0) took over and when they were given a breather Hartfield required 92 off 11 overs. After QB (3 overs 49 runs) and Tel (3 overs 34 runs) had a 3 over spell each, the odds suddenly favoured Hartfield with them needing just 7 runs off 4 overs. Oh dear.
The game was finished off by yours truly letting a straight one from Dom go flying past me for 4 byes. It just about summed up the day.
Statto’s report
All good things must ultimately come crashing down…and so it is with the Mighty Greys as we register our first defeat of the season.
As upsetting as this is what has it done to the stats? In the batting both the top 2 failed to fire and the Skipper currently in 3rd place finally met his match and was dismissed for the first time this season, giving him a rather healthy average on 117. In the bowling for a second week not many wickets fell to the Greys attack, so DD stays well clear.
Nothing occurring in the lifetimes.
Next week we’re feltching…
